THE LONG ISLAND PERMIT MAZE — EXPLAINED

Sidewalk Permit Long Island — ROW Guide

Long Island does not have a single countywide permit office. Permits are handled at the town, village, county, and state level — 148 separate authorities in all. Here is the complete map, and how we handle every one of them for you.

If a contractor tells you "we'll figure out the permit later," walk away. Long Island sidewalk work in the public right-of-way almost always requires a permit, and the wrong agency means the wrong application, the wrong fee, and a stop-work order. We handle every permit at every level — it's included in the estimate.

The 148 Long Island permit authorities

Nassau County has 3 towns (Hempstead, North Hempstead, Oyster Bay) and 64 incorporated villages, each with its own building department. Suffolk County has 10 towns, each with its own DPW or highway department. Nassau and Suffolk both have county-level DPWs for county roads. NYSDOT covers state highways. That is 148 separate permit authorities — and the right one depends on which road your sidewalk fronts.
